Raceday LIVE Preview
Cast No Shadow makes the familiar trip to Newcastle this afternoon, for his seventh race over the five furlong trip at the course. His record there has been impressive to this point in his career, winning on two occasions last year on top of a second place finish at the end of 2023.
WATCH: A Horse for a Course with Cast No Shadow

Cast No Shadow has actually ended up spending a little bit longer off the track than was planned over the last month, as he was due to run towards the end of December, but unfortunately knocked his shoe off when working at home which ruled him out of that contest. He's was allowed a couple of weeks off following that minor incident, which will have hopefully freshened him up nicely for this run to kick off the year.
Today's race should be much more favourable than some of his recent contests, given that it's a similar sized field to those he's won in amongst previously and back down in class to a reasonable standard in which he'll be the top rated horse in the field.
Jack Mitchell takes the reins on a Coral Racing Club horse for the first time when he jumps onboard Cast No Shadow today, and the going is set to be Standard, with no inclement weather expected to slow down proceedings this afternoon.
Raceday message from Hugo Palmer
"Cast No Shadow returns to action this afternoon. He lines up in a small field of six, with a number of the field in considerably better recent form than him. However, looking through it, it would seem that only the favourite, Darlo Pride, has raced prominently before and it would appear that the rest of the field want to be held up.
I hope that in a first-time visor, we should be able to be really positive and Cast No Shadow might get an uncontested lead, which in this low grade, he might be able to capitalise on."
Trainer and Jockey Statistics
Hugo Palmer has been relatively quiet since the turn of the year, only sending out six horses so far in 2025, however he has won with two of those horses, with both coming on the January 4th. The all-weather course at Newcastle is also a track that Hugo has been typically successful at in his career, having won there on 47 occasions.
Jack Mitchell has been in solid form recently, scoring 6 times on 22 horses so far in 2025, with the most recent one coming on Saturday at Newcastle. He has also had a strong partnership with Hugo Palmer's horses in the past, having won 36 times in 206 rides for the trainer.

Chris Dixon, Racing TV Analyst, previews this afternoon's race and gives his opinion on how he thinks Cast No Shadow will fare in the contest
Cast No Shadow has struggled since gaining his second career success over this course and distance in June. As such it’s hard to be confident that he’ll return to form here, though the much smaller field here could be a big positive. I’m fairly sure Cast No Shadow is at his best when getting an uncontested lead and in a small field of just 6 runners that lacks any other regular front runners, there has to be a good chance of him being able to secure a tactical advantage. The addition of visors for the first time (replacing the usual cheek pieces) could help and with the pace holding up well at the track in many races on Saturday plus a short break of 39 days giving him the opportunity to freshen up there are reasons to be hopeful Cast No Shadow may revive.
Although there aren’t many opponents, there’s not a shortage of in-form horses lining up, including a pair of last-time-out course and distance winners. Water Of Leith beat an in-form and fairly treated rival to win here last time and remains well handicapped on his best following a 3lbs rise. The form of his latest win is backed up by the time and he should run well, though does ideally want a solid tempo to aim at.
Show Me Show Me also went up 3lbs for his win and theoretically remains well-handicapped on old form but he’s an 8yo now and may not reach his previous heights which will likely be needed in what is a higher grade than the one he won in last time. A regular slow started, he would also appreciate a good pace.
Darlo Pride has been in great form for a couple of months during which time he’s won twice, including over this course and distance so he looks a potentially big player off what still looks a feasible mark, especially with promising 7lbs claimer Warren Fentiman’s allowance lowering his burden.
Above is another in-form horse having hit the frame the last twice and he’s another contender under Billy Loughnane who has his first rides back in the UK following a short stint in Australia.
