Raceday LIVE Preview

Cast No Shadow returns to the scene of his only two victories to date this afternoon at Newcastle Racecourse where he's set to run over the same distance he has been successful both times over at Gosforth Park.

Both of his victories have come this year, with the first arriving on March 1st. He was expected to win that day, being sent off the 2/7 favourite in a field of five, and he duly delivered, making all of the running throughout the race and didn't so much as catch a glimpse of a rival en route to a three and a quarter length victory.

Following that contest he was immediately gelded and the team at Manor House began looking at opportunities on the turf for him at the start of the flat season proper, and Windsor was decided as his first destination. Unfortunately he didn't cope with the quick ground that day, and actually lost a shoe on his way round, finishing last of the seven runners after being eased down in the closing stages of the race. It was a similar story on his next start nine days later up at Catterick, where he faded late in the contest and finished tailed off once more.

Hugo Palmer gave him a slightly extended break following that contest, allowing him time to recover. The decision was made during that time to send him back onto the all-weather for his next engagement, and the perfect opportunity came back over the five furlong trip at Newcastle. Hugo was confident in his chances going into that contest and made the eye catching jockey booking of three-time British Champion Flat Jockey, Silvestre De Sousa.

Cast No Shadow was given a confident ride that day, again leading from the front having broken well. He faced a strong challenge in the closing stages, but stuck to his guns under a great ride by Silvestre De Sousa and stuck his neck out on the line to keep his lead and win over £4,700 for his 10 lucky owners for the day.

Raceday message from Hugo Palmer

"We've been waiting some time for another opportunity over the five furlongs at Newcastle, and so while this is a deeper race than those he has run in previously at the track, and we could have waited for a race in lesser company, we were keen to get him out again.

He’s ready to run, he’s very well, and we’ll put a line through his last run at Wolverhampton, where he was too keen early on and was never able to deliver a finishing effort. On his four runs at Newcastle he has never finished worse than fourth, and it may just be this is where he always runs his best races. The saying horses for courses is there for a reason!

This is a full field of 14, but despite that, there don’t appear to be too many runners who want to go on early, so Jason Hart [jockey] should be able to use Cast No Shadow’s early pace to get a good position, and from there, it will be a case of how he fares against this better opposition. He’s fit and well, the jockey knows him well, so there’s lot to be positive about."

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Hugo Palmer hasn't been very fortunate recently with only one winner in his last 27 runners, which was at Chelmsford five days ago, with a further five hitting the crossbar. Hugo has had 71 total winners this season however, amassing over £1.25m in prize money in the process from 483 runners (15% strike-rate). Newcastle has been a particularly happy hunting ground for the Cheshire-based trainer, with 47 career winners coming from 258 runners at the Northumberland track with seven of those winners have arrived this season.

Jason Hart partners Cast No Shadow for the fifth time this afternoon but has been in similarly quiet form to Hugo Palmer recently, scoring three times from 47 rides in the last fortnight. 104 of his career wins have come on the all-weather at Newcastle, with 16 of them coming this year an one of those being Cast No Shadow earlier this year. Jason has won 17 times from 87 rides in his career for Hugo Palmer at a rate of 20% and 10 of those have come from 67 rides this year.

Prize Money

2nd: £3,853 | 3rd: £1,927 | 4th: £963

Chris Dixon, Racing TV Analyst, gives us his thoughts on Cast No Shadow's chances in the race and the opponents who are likely to put up the biggest challenge.

Cast No Shadow
ran well below form when back from a few months off at Wolverhampton last time but the return to Newcastle could be the tonic he needs to get back to form. A winner on his penultimate start, that all the way win under Silvestre De Sousa took his form figures at this track to 2411 so this is clearly the venue that brings out the best in him. Forcing tactics also seem to suit best and there’s a good chance he’ll get to the lead here under Jason Hart who is often seen to good effect when making the running, though class-dropper Bond Chairman and Lucky Man, who made all to win at Windsor on his penultimate start, are other potential pace-angles in the race. So, although this does look a competitive race for the grade, and is a higher level handicap than Cast No Shadow need contest, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him get back to form.

The Opposition

The aforementioned Bond Chairman is well-handicapped and a big threat to all at this level if coming back to close to his best, while similar is true of Alligator Alley who didn’t get much luck at Beverley last time. Jenever shot up the handicap after winning over C&D just shy of a year ago but has notched another win since and ran a fine race in the Ayr Silver Cup last time - he should remain competitive in a slightly lesser race here. Londoner was well behind him at Ayr but did go close here last time and is on a good mark but this shorter trip could be an issue so he’s rated a danger but not so potent as some of the others mentioned in an open race.
