Raceday LIVE Preview

Diamond Days made his long awaited racecourse debut at Wincanton at the end of last month, in a race won by Tennessee Tango, another horse trained by Joe Tizzard, and Diamond Days will have learned a lot from his experience out on the track that day despite finishing last of eight.

He looked sharp for much of the running, in a race that started off in strange fashion, with several of the runners crossing paths with each other when the flag dropped at the start. All of the field came out of that messy beginning unscathed however, and Diamond Days took up a prominent position in second. He travelled there for the majority of the race before the pace began to pick up two furlongs from home, and that's when he began to struggle to keep up with his opponents. From that point, it was Harry Kimber's priority to make sure our four-year-old made it home safely, as it was evident he wasn't going to be contesting the finish.

The ground was Good at Wincanton on that day, and it's set to be the same again this weekend at Fontwell, with the lack of rain across the country leading to a shortage of ground that you'd prefer for National Hunt horses. Joe Tizzard has previously said that he believes Diamond Days might prefer a bit of juice in the ground, so it'll be interesting to see how he takes to the sounder surface over hurdles this afternoon.

Raceday Message from Joe Tizzard

"I’m really looking forward to running Diamond Days, he’s been schooling nicely at home, and he’ll be a lot sharper for his bumper run. He’ll almost certainly need two or three runs to get the hang of hurdling, and that’s fine, as he’ll get his handicap mark then anyway.

Fitness wise, that bumper run really did bring him on, we can see the physical difference in him, as I said after that race, he ran a lot better than his finishing position suggested, and for a debut run, it was very encouraging.

Hurdling was always going to be his thing, so we haven’t wasted any time getting him started. He’ll learn plenty around Fontwell, they’re always on the turn so that should help Brendan settle him and he can hopefully finish off his race well."

Chris Dixon, Racing TV Analyst, previews Diamond Days' chances in this afternoon's race and who his main rivals will likely be at Fontwell

Although there are elements of his pedigree that suggested Diamond Days could show a bit in a bumper prior to his debut at Wincanton three weeks ago, he looked short of pace when the gallop picked up on a sharp track behind his winning stablemate and it’s not a surprise to see a quick switch to hurdles. He will need to find a big chunk of improvement in order to get competitive and it’s likely he’ll want further in time, probably once moving into handicaps, but it will be interesting to see how he gets on as he tackles obstacles for the first time.

Authentic Legacy looks the form pick on the basis of two second-place finishes over hurdles so far, including when chasing home a promising winner at Fakenham last time. He also showed ability in a couple of bumper starts and looks to have a decent opportunity of breaking his maiden at a track where his yard enjoy plenty of success.

He holds bumper winner Jubilant on that latest form from Fakenham and should confirm those placings and it could be that the biggest danger comes in the shape of Gooloogong. A winner on the flat, he got to a decent level in that sphere and looked like he’d be well capable of making an impact in races like this when having his second outing over hurdles over this course and distance nine days ago. Held up out the back in a race where the first two home were always handy, he made his ground into the race easily enough but a late stumble knocked the stuffing out of him and he flattened out up the run in. That was an encouraging run and he looks a big player alongside Authentic Legacy with the pair very much looking the pair to concentrate on.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Joe Tizzard has hit an incredible patch of form recently, posting 8 winners in the last fortnight from 26 runners (31% strike-rate), including a Grade 2 winner at Exeter with JPR One and a double on the card at Taunton three days ago. His career form as a trainer at Fontwell is also solid, with 11 winners from 63 runners, including three winners from seven appearances contributing to that total this season.

Brendan Powell has won six races from 24 rides in the last two weeks, with all of those victories coming for Joe Tizzard, which is to be expected as he is the stable jockey at Venn Farm. In total he's ridden 79 winners for Joe Tizzard, with 17 of those coming this season. Fontwell has also proved a fruitful destination for Brendan, as he's had 41 winners these in his career, more than at any other track. He's also won three times at the Sussex venue this season.
