Raceday LIVE Preview

It was a positive start from Sycamore for the Coral Racing Club a couple of weeks ago as he managed to hit the frame and finish in third place on his first start since joining with trainer Scott Dixon.

After the race, Scott was quick to mention he'd already picked out a couple of races on the turf for Sycamore, with one of them being today's contest at Yarmouth.

Sycamore has only ran once on the turf since moving to Scott from Martyn Meade back in 2021, and that came on Good To Soft ground at Pontefract in October last year. Today's conditions at Yarmouth are set to be quite different, with the ground currently marked as Good To Firm, which Scott believes is where we'll hopefully see the best of Sycamore.

In his post-race update, Scott said "He’s a bit unknown on the turf, as all his turf form was as a two and three-year-old for his former trainer Martyn Meade. His running style would suggest he will handle ‘Good’ and ‘Good to Firm’." so fingers crossed Sycamore can put his best foot forward and prove him right today.

Raceday message from Scott Dixon

"Sycamore remains in good form at home, and we’ve been happy with his preparation leading up to this race.

I feel the track and trip should suit him based on his style of running, and the ground looks like is will be to his liking (currently Good To Firm) with little rain due to fall prior to running.

I’m happy enough with his draw and don’t feel that will be a major factor in his chances. I’m also very pleased we could get Dale Swift to ride him as he has ridden him to best effect during the all weather season, including when winning at Newcastle under a fantastic ride from the back of the field and getting up late on.

Good luck team."

Sycamore's Owners for the Day

As winners of the Owner for the Day competition, 10 lucky Coral Racing Club members have been given the chance to enjoy an exclusive owners experience for Sycamore's run at Yarmouth this afternoon.

Each winner, along with a guest of their choosing, will receive free entry to Yarmouth Racecourse, including exclusive access to Owners & Trainers areas. They'll have the opportunity to meet Sycamore and the Scott Dixon team, plus get to head into the parade ring before the race begins to be amongst all the other owners, trainers and jockeys. And last but by no means least, each winner will get to take home an equal 10% split of any prize money won by Sycamore.

Today's Class 5 contest is worth £8,400 in total, with the winner set to scoop £4,396.56 for their lucky owners.

2nd: £2,063.04 | 3rd: £1,030.68 | 4th: £515.76 | 5th: £257.04

Trainer and jockey form

Scott Dixon probably hasn't had as many winners as he would've hoped since the turn of the year, but a lot of that can be put down to the fact his stable have been on a rescue mission following the flooding of his Southwell yard over the winter.

However, since the turf season got underway, Scott's form has been solid with him sending out two winners from just 11 runners so far.

Dale Swift has ridden seven winners so far in 2024, with one of them being onboard Sycamore at Newcastle in January, but he's yet to get off the mark on turf. He's only had 10 rides at Yarmouth in his career to date, but from those he's ridden one winner and five third places finishes.

Racing Post | Spotlight Comment

Sycamore has found some consistency on the AW and finished well from off the pace to make the frame at Southwell two weeks ago (1m); some doubts about him being as good on the grass but not easily ruled out.

Today's opposition

  • Charlatan rattled off a quick hat-trick on the all-weather earlier in the year which saw his mark rise 12lb or so. Following a short break, he'll be hoping to continue his run of good form and put his last turf effort behind him which saw him finish last of 11 at Newbury in May last year.
  • Lunario finished second last time out on heavy ground at Thirsk for fellow Coral Racing Club trainer Alice Haynes. Blinkers are fitted for today's contest, but the question is will he be able to match that run last time out on a much sounder surface at Yarmouth this afternoon?
  • Beylerbeli comes into this race as a bit of a dark horse for the Ian Williams team having moved to England from France last year. The four-year-old gelding hit the crossbar twice on the all-weather over the last few months, but in between those runs has finished well down the field. It'll be interesting to see if the return to turf can spring him back to life with top young jockey David Egan booked to ride.
