Live Raceday! Lady Mendoza runs at Southwell today

Southwell – Class 4 Novices' Hurdle, Wed 08 Feb 2023 15:40

16:15 – A tough day at the office for Lady Mendoza

Unfortunately it wasn't to be today as Lady Mendoza didn't seem herself at all once the race got underway and unfortunately had to be pulled up before the finish.

Nathan Moscrop had this to say post-race:

"She travelled ok for a mile but I just felt flat out. She's obviously not very well, but she definitely prefers that kind of ground.

When you're sick, you're sick, there's nothing you can do. We've probably run her a bit too quick after Catterick as well."

We'll catch up with Rebecca and the team over the next few days to see how Lady Mendoza is and be sure to update you all as soon as we know more.

15:35 – Lady Mendoza wins best turned out in the parade ring

15:30 – Racing Post verdict

Sedge Wren looked very promising in bumpers last season but her winning hurdle debut in October was far from convincing and she will probably need to jump with a lot more fluency to overcome her penalty here.

Lady Mendoza didn't fire on soft ground last month but has claims if judged on her Newcastle second.

Preference is for CHOSEN PORT, who shaped with significant promise before her last-flight fall at Leicester.

15:00 – It didn't quite go to plan at Catterick last time out, but the Owners for the Day still had a fantastic day out

The rain and sticky ground hampered Lady Mendoza's chances when she ran at Catterick on New Year's Day, but her Owners for the Day still had a great experience as they got to meet Rebecca and Nathan, and also enjoy the exclusive Owners and Trainers areas at the track.

14:40 – Just one hour to go until the big race!

We spoke to Rebecca earlier today and this is what she had to say ahead of the race.

"We'll ride Lady Mendoza nice and positively, as we did first time up at Newcastle, hopefully she can get a position in the first 2 or 3, and I've told Nathan [Moscrop] to give her a good look at her hurdles.

A few of mine have been a bit under the weather, but it was good to get a winner last night, so hopefully we've turned a corner. Lady Mendoza schooled well yesterday and we're looking for a good run here to get her back on track.

We've put a line through Catterick as the going was just too soft, but it's much better here. Whatever happens she'll get her handicap mark after today and then we'll have many more options.

Good luck to her owners today, and I'll update after the race."

14:20 – Can Lady Mendoza help Nathan Moscrop go one step closer to breaking his jockey record?

Just as Rebecca is having a superb season so far, her stable jockey Nathan Moscrop is too. Last season he rode 22 winners to victory, and as of today, he's currently on 21 for the season.

A win today with Lady Mendoza will bring him level with his 2021-22 numbers, which would mean it'll be all eyes on his next few rides to see if he can break his record.

13:50 – The Menzies Way

Rebecca is having her best season yet as a trainer with 33 wins, and there's no doubt plenty more still to come.

A few weeks ago we headed to Howe Hills to find out more about the full operation up in County Durham – from Brenda the rescue pony to trips to Redcar beach, you don't want to miss this!

13:30 – Where it all began for Lady Mendoza (and Best Mate)

Rewind the clock back to March 2022 and that's when Lady Mendoza made her Point-to-Point debut at Belclare in Ireland.

Belclare is the same track that the three-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Best Mate, won a four-year-old maiden back in 1999 before going on to make his bumper debut in the same year at Cheltenham for Henrietta Knight.

13:20 – It's a beautiful day at Southwell as the crowd start to arrive ahead of the first race at 13:35

13:00 – Good afternoon to all our Coral Racing Club members!

Ahead of Lady Mendoza's third run for the Club in the 15:40 Mares' Novices' Hurdle at Southwell today, we'll be here for all the build-up and to bring you live updates from the track with the team and Lady Mendoza's Owners for the Day.
