Phoenix Of Dreams set to return in the next ten days with an eye on Ayr's Gold Cup Festival in September

26 Aug 2025
Phoenix Of Dreams has been waiting patiently on the sidelines for the last few weeks, as John and Sean Quinn opted to hang fire until a little bit of rain arrives before sending him back out on the racecourse again.

After a prolonged break, he finally go to kick his year off at Ayr in July where he finished a solid fourth, only a length and a half behind the winner on the day. That effort was one that could be marked up seeing as it was his first competitive start since December last year, plus he was carrying a top weight of 10st.

He was then sent to Windsor for his second run two weeks later, where the ground was soft, and unfortunately he just found himself getting a little too revved up in the parade ring initially, as well as the run down to the stalls. Regular partner, Jason Hart, had to take a keen hold of him all the way through the race and just found that he wasted too much energy in the early stages whilst pulling quite hard. He came home eighth that day and the decision was made to let him recover for a little whilst following that run.

Thankfully, Phoenix Of Dreams has been well at home since and none the worse for that race at Windsor, but the Quinns continue to believe that he acts better on softer than good ground, so they thought it would be better to work him a little more at home, whilst waiting for some rain to come in at a suitable course. In addition to that, they're also keen to drop him back to the minimum trip of five furlongs for the first time on his next start, which they hope will help bring out improvement given how strongly he travels in his contests.

The first of his options over the next couple of weeks is this Saturday at Sandown in a Class 4 Handicap over five furlongs, for which he already has an entry. Next up are races of the same grade and distance at Goodwood and Haydock on September 2nd and 5th respectively.

An interesting ante post entry to note for our four-year-old is the one he has in the Ayr Gold Cup in September. Although this race is likely to be out of his reach due to his rating, by virtue of being entered, it means he can still qualify for the consolation races, the Silver Cup and the Bronze Cup. How he runs on his next appearance will likely dictate the next steps, as well as which race at Ayr he could be heading for, if any.

Keep an eye on the Coral Racing Club over the coming days and weeks to find out where Phoenix Of Dreams gets declared next and whether or not he'll head to Ayr for their Gold Cup Festival.
