Raceday LIVE Preview

Aspire To Glory is back out on the racecourse again today as he heads to Newcastle to take on their straight mile course for the first time in his career. It won't be the first time he's tackled a mile long trip however, having done so eight times in his 24 runs under rules so far, with the last of those coming three starts ago in mid-December when he finished 8th at Chelmsford.

His latest run was the most encouraging performance he's put in since the summer when coming home in 2nd place behind a well-supported favourite at Southwell just over a week ago. Aspire To Glory took a keen hold after breaking well and spent most of the race in at least a share of the lead, and he was ahead going into the final furlong, with hot favourite Monsieur Fantasie chasing him down. Unfortunately for us, Joanna Mason timed her run well and got ahead of Aspire To Glory inside the closing stages, eventually going on to win by just over a length.

Alice Haynes and her team were more than pleased with the upturn in form Aspire To Glory showed last Wednesday, attributing some of the result to him not wearing any headgear this time around. The Newmarket trainer had experimented with several pieces of garb on our four-year-old in recent races, culminating in a plethora of equipment applied to him two runs ago, when he finished 9th of 12 at Wolverhampton on Boxing Day. She decided to remove it all for his last run, believing that it could help to liven him up on the course, and clearly it worked as his performance was a marked improvement on his previous few outings.

Our four-year-old gelding's improvement didn't go unnoticed, however. The handicapper took note and raised him 5lbs for that run, which appears to have come from him finishing just over a length behind a horse rated 7lbs better than him, and over two lengths clear of a horse rated 2lbs better than him, whilst running off of the same weight.

Aspire To Glory has been drawn in stall one, so it'll be interesting to see how he breaks and where today's jockey Rowan Scott positions him as they travel through the early stages of the race. Rowan will be having his first ride for the Coral Racing Club this afternoon, and the Yorkshire based jockey has a good record when riding for Alice so hopefully he can maintain that later today.

Raceday update from trainer Alice Haynes

'Aspire To Glory runs today in a Classified Stakes over a mile at Newcastle with Rowan Scott on board. This looked a more appealing option rather than trying to overcome his wide draw over 1m2f at Lingfield yesterday.

The handicapper has raised Aspire To Glory 5lb to a mark of 48 following his second at Southwell last week, so hopefully he can run another good race today. If he reproduces something similar to his Southwell run, we should have a good chance. Cloch Nua is the obvious one we all have to beat, but beyond that, I don’t think there is too much to fear in the race.'

Chris Dixon, Racing TV Analyst, provides an exclusive preview of today's 13:46 at Newcastle

The removal of all the headgear and return to more prominent tactics coincided with a return to form from Aspire To Glory at Southwell last week. The form of that race stacks up for the level, with the winner Monsieur Fantasie arriving into the race on the back of a couple of narrow defeats and the third, Mr Slicker, who was over two lengths away, running well both before and since. On the figures the Southwell performance is close to the best form produced by Aspire To Glory and was backed up by the time, so he looks right at the top of his game heading to Newcastle. Whether this track will be as suitable is open to question, and I’d be slightly cautious about him reproducing the Southwell form given the different venue and trip, plus a potentially problematic draw in stall 1, but he is capable of holding his form once he’s found it and this race doesn’t look any strong than the one he ran so well in last week.

Cloch Nua looks the horse to beat having overcome a tardy start to win here three weeks ago and the presence of Paul Mulrennan, who rides this track exceptionally well, is a plus for Stella Barclay’s runner. He beat Martin’s Brig and Coramento into the places last time but did so from what looked a disadvantageous position and should confirm the form with that pair on the same terms in a race that looks likely to be more strongly run and as such favour Cloch Nua more this time. Top Gun Tina is a regular slow starter and is yet to win a race, but she did run well when fourth here last time when she had Martin’s Brig behind in a race that has already thrown up a subsequent winner and was probably a stronger race than this is likely to be. As such, she appeals as one of the key players in this.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Alice Haynes has only posted one winner in the last fortnight, and that came at Chelmsford exactly a week ago. She's had four horses finish in the places during that time too, with Aspire To Glory's second place at Southwell being one of those. She's had 8 winners from 78 runners in her career on the all-weather at Newcastle and is looking to post her first win at the course this season with her sixth runner.

Rowan Scott has also only had one winner in the last fortnight, which came five days ago at Wolverhampton for Ewan Whillans, however he has only had two rides since then, which include a third place finish at Newcastle. It's safe to say Rowan Scott knows the Newcastle track well, as he's had 583 rides on the al-weather there, posting 35 winners from those rides, although he is 0-14 there this year. He has a good strike-rate of 18% when combining with Alice Haynes, winning 7 times from 38 rides for the trainer, and today will mark the first time that he's ridden for her this season.
