Raceday LIVE Preview

Aspire To Glory is set to make his eleventh start of the year for the club at Wolverhampton later on as he looks to improve upon his fourth place finish there last time out. Trainer Alice Haynes was happy with the performance given it was his first attempt at Wolverhampton, in which he only finished two lengths behind the winner, and said that he had come out of the race well.

In her post-race summary, Alice also mentioned that they would kick on with Aspire To Glory on the all-weather for the foreseeable which is why he's looking to take his chance not long after his last appearance. Today will mark the first time that Aspire To Glory has ever raced at a distance over a mile, albeit only slightly with the extra half furlong, but he did take well to the Wolverhampton course and the tapeta surface last time, so it's not surprising to see him back at the venue today at a new trip.

Aspire To Glory and his Owners for the Day at Wolverhampton

Our three-year-old son of Cotai Glory is drawn fairly wide in Stall 11, but we'll be hoping he can break well and settle down nice and early under jockey Christian Howarth who will be riding Aspire To Glory for the fourth time.

Aspire To Glory's two victories so far for the club have come on the all-weather, although both of those wins came either side of the New Year and were on a polytrack surface, but with the effort he put in last time out, there's no reason to think he can't improve upon that run and make a big challenge to finish in the top three.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Alice Haynes is in quiet form right now, and hasn't had a winner in over three weeks, however she has picked up four spots on the podium in the last fortnight. At Wolverhampton, the Newmarket based trainer has had 24 career winners, with seven of those coming this year.

Christian Howarth has seen a fair amount of action recently, riding 11 times in the last fortnight and winning onboard one of those horses, for Grant Tuer at Redcar. At today's course, he's had 11 career winners from 127 rides, operating at a modest 9% strike-rate, however, only one of those wins has arrived this year from a total of 25 rides. Christian Howarth has partnered Aspire To Glory three times before, including at Wolverhampton when our three-year-old was last seen on track, so they have history together and Christian will naturally have a better understanding of how Aspire To Glory will want to run.

Pre-Race Message from Alice Haynes

"Good luck with Aspire To Glory heading to Wolverhampton this evening.

He ran his best race for a while last time at the track when running with just the tongue tie, and we've left things that way for this run tomorrow. The extra furlong and a half around here should really suit him well, especially as it gives him a bit more time to work his way into the race from his wide draw.

Christian got on well with him last time and we're looking forward to them teaming up again tonight."

Chris Dixon, Racing TV Analyst, shares his thoughts on Aspire To Glory and his likely main market rivals below.

Aspire To Glory

The return to an AW surface on a turning track brought about something of a return to form from Aspire To Glory over 7f here last time, so sticking to this set of conditions looks a plus. Though both his wins have been over 7f, his Ripon form earlier this season suggests this trip is in range and he’s now off a competitive mark (4lbs below his last win). He’s a slightly tricky customer who can break slowly so a wide draw in stall 11 probably isn’t a huge concern, but he does look like a horse who’s best off a good pace, so the presence of just one regular front-runner in the field might be a slight concern. Overall the race lacks depth and if he runs up to his best the he should be competitive for the places at least and could well get his head in front should the pace be stronger than anticipated.

Rest of the field

Cuban Harry could be a big danger to them all, he’s still a maiden but has dropped to a good mark and both his runs at this track have been encouraging. He drops in grade to 0-55 company for the first time and could take advantage. The unexposed 3yo Northstead Gardens ran better last time and looks a contender following a 2lbs drop in the ratings while La Sonnambula, also a lightly-raced 3yo, ran her best race on her most recent start despite being held up in a race where the pace held up well. She could be another to make an impact under leading apprentice Sean Dylan Bowen who claims 3lbs off her back.

At The Races | Verdict

"The likes of La Sonnambula and Soveraine both try different headgear applications for the first time and are shortlisted as potential improvers, while Lightning Bay has been placed here off this mark and warrants consideration. However, ASPIRE TO GLORY appeals off 4lb below his last winning rating and shades preference back up in trip, with Christain Howarth's 3lb claim an additional bonus."
