Raceday LIVE Preview
Conservative made his long awaited debut over hurdles last week at Worcester and finished a very credible sixth out of nine runners for trainer Joe Tizzard.
As the race got underway, despite being a little keen, Conservative looked comfortable whilst jumping and was positioned towards the rear but still in touch with the rest of the pack. After they'd past half way, he looked to have hit a flat spot and appeared to be struggling to stay in touch. However, despite having to be brought widest of all around the final bend, our five-year-old looked to have found his second wind and started to make headway, passing by two of his rivals and staying on well in the long home straight.
Joe Tizzard told us that he came out of the race absolutely fine and that the main aim is to get him a handicap mark before the jumps season kicks into full gear later in the year, and the next step on that journey is to run him again before the start of the three-week break in the jumps calendar next month.
Jockey Brendan Powell, who rides him again today, was also pleased with Conservative's performance on debut, saying that despite hitting a flat spot after being keen in the early stages, he stayed on really well and finished his race in proper fashion.

Raceday message from Joe Tizzard
"We were keen to get Conservative out again quickly following his hurdles debut at Worcester last week, after this weekend the jumps season has a short break, and then we’ll give him his third run, after which he’ll get handicapped.
His Worcester run was a funny old run, he was a bit keen early on, then looked as if he was going to be tailed off, before running on again. On the whole he jumped well, particularly for a debut run.
Deploy To Spy and Boyles Hill look the ones to beat here, but apart from that pair, it’s not the strongest looking novice, so if our fellow can show some improvement from his Worcester run, he could improve on his sixth place finish from that run.
Both Brendan and I are convinced this horse has enough ability to win a race over hurdles, he’s shown us enough at home, now we have to get him to show it on the track."

Trainer and jockey form
Joe Tizzard has been very quiet as of late, only sending out four runners in the last fortnight including one third place finish. In terms of Uttoxeter, Joe has only sent 10 runners to the Staffordshire-based track, resulting in one win and two second place finishes.
Brendan Powell has kept himself busy so far since the start of the new jumps season, riding 80 times in total, notching four wins and a further 19 placed efforts from those rides. Two of his victories this season have been for Joe Tizzard, and one of his wins came at Uttoxeter. Brendan has had 18 total winners at Uttoxeter in his career from 164 rides, with a further 40 finishing in the first three home.
Today's opposition
- Boyles Hill won his bumper by a narrow margin in February, before making the switch to rules racing. He finished a solid second in a bumper in April before coming home in a close third place on his debut over hurdles last time out in May.
- Deploy To Spy has been held onto until turning six, making one of the older horses in the field. He finished second in his racecourse debut before being brought down when running well under Sean Bowen at Uttoxeter earlier in the month.
- Cornamona is another of today's opponents that started their life out under rules with a place finish. She came in a distant third place on debut, after winning her point-to-point by a big margin. The mare had a tough time of it last time out, finishing seventh out of ten over today's course and distance last week.
