Diamond Days makes his third start over fences as Phoenix Of Dreams secures a top three finish at Southwell | Raceday Highlights

20 Jan 2026
The Coral Racing Club kicked off the week with a double header, as Diamond Days and Phoenix Of Dreams made their way to Lingfield and Wolverhampton.

Monday's action got underway in the final race on the card at Lingfield, the Class 5 Handicap Chase over 2m4f, in which Diamond Days was making his third start over fences. Confidence was relatively high heading into the contest, as Lingfield is a course that Diamond Days has enjoyed running at in his two previous visits. His two highest RPRs recorded to date had been at Lingfield, so there was good reason for both our support, and that of the market that pushed him into a starting price of 11/2.

Everything seemed to be going to plan in the early stages of the race with jockey, Brendan Powell, dropping him into the midfield with both something to aim at and a bit of clear space around him. He continued to travel well before being hampered by the outsider of the field, Arctic Stream, at the eighth fence, after which Diamond Days clearly hit a bit of a flat spot and began to drop back in the field gradually.

Diamond Days did appear to make up some ground on the flat between some of the latter fences, however a juddering error at the penultimate fence halted any more progress with one flight left to take. He did pick up once more, proving that he has incredible tenacity and an engine built for these tough, middle distance contests, but he ultimately fell short of a fourth place finish by three quarters of a length.

Diamond Days was able to pick up a small amount of prize money for his lucky Owners for the Day, who each got to take home a share of the £155 prize money for the fifth place finish.

We caught up with the team at Venn Farm the morning after the contest and they told us this:

"Diamond Days is absolutely fine this morning and he's trotted up absolutely sound. He is a little bit stiff but that's nothing out of the ordinary for a horse that has come out of race on heavy ground like that. We're all very happy with him, he was a little bit outpaced early on in the contest but his jumping was really good before he got hampered, which obviously affected his confidence in the back end of the race, on top of the testing conditions.

He showed a brilliant attitude to plug on at the end there when it looked as though he could down tools, and you could see he was fighting to get past Constant Friday to get his head in front all the way to the line.

There's lots of positives to take from the run, it's certainly a step forward from his previous run at Fontwell, and hopefully we can find the right contest for him next time out and he'll get his head in front for us."

We'll keep members posted on any targets that are made for Diamond Days in the coming weeks, as the team look to get him into the winners' enclosure before the end of the season.

Phoenix Of Dreams made his journey to Wolverhampton later in the evening to take on their six furlong contest, having looked better in his second appearance since wind surgery at Southwell in his previous run. Jockey Jason Hart was encouraged by his performance that day, believing that he was making good strides to getting back to his best.

Trainer Sean Quinn told us following Phoenix Of Dreams' last race that he wanted to switch things up tactically next time around, and so he booked decided to switch jockeys to Sean Levey. Levey was able to keep ahold of Phoenix Of Dreams in the early part of the race and got him settled. The pair continued to track just in behind the leaders of the race before making a move coming around the final bend, where Phoenix Of Dreams started to hang left, but kept up to his task with vigor and conviction. Unfortunately there was nothing that could be done to catch Addarella, who made all to win the race by a convincing 2½ lengths, but our five-year-old did battle to the line and just missed out on second place to the experience Water Of Leith as the pair hit the line.

The result landed Phoenix Of Dreams' 10 owners for the day £733 in prize money, with each of them getting to take home a 10% share.

Check out what Sean Quinn had to say when he reached out to us earler today:

"Phoenix Of Dreams has come out of last night's race in good order and he's eaten up well this morning. I'm very encouraged by his performance last night, but I suppose the main concern that I've got, and Sean Levey touched on it when you spoke to him following the race last night, and it's that he doesn't really quicken. His pace would suggest that he's probably more like a seven furlong horse, but to get home over seven you've got to settle.

I think that we'll stick to six furlongs with him for his next run, perhaps we'll head to Newcastle for their stiffer, straight six furlong trip if we can find the right race for him there. There might be other suitable options like Southwell and Chelmsford, that are are a more galloping tracks which could suit.

I'd love to see him settle down early in his races, and then we can try him over seven furlongs again which in theory should help us see even more improvement in him.

I think we're very much on the right track and I hope that another win isn't too far away."

Check back soon to find out where Phoenix Of Dreams will head next, which shouldn't be too far away.
