Katalyst takes a huge step forward at Nottingham with fourth place finish | Raceday Highlights

20 May 2026
Katalyst took a fantastic step forward at Nottingham on her second start of the year earlier in the week, finishing fourth in a Class 5 contest over the extended mile trip.

It's safe to say that Katalyst had a tough time on her first start of the season, where she finished last of the six runners at Lingfield, after being allowed to get home in her own time by jockey Billy Loughnane. Fast forward a short three weeks and the Muir & Grassick team had her ready to head back out onto the course, looking to improve on that debut run of the year. They chose to switch her to turf, for the first time since her debut in August of last year at Chepstow, and to apply blinkers for the first time in her career in order to keep her focused on what was in front of her, rather than the opposition running upside her.

Katalyst was sent off at a massive 50/1 SP and Lewis Edmunds, who was riding our filly for the fourth time in her seven starts, took her to the front of the field from stall six, leading out the rest of the competition down the back straight and into the bend. Our three-year-old remained at the front of the field coming out of the bend, before coming under pressure with two furlongs to run. She was eventually headed by Wondrous Light and Volendam, who finished the race in first and second, but battled on resolutely in an attempt to hold off Stella Lucente. Unfortunately Katalyst was just beaten into fourth on the line by the Oisin Murphy-ridden filly, but the quality of the run was an undoubted improvement on her first contest of the season.

We caught up with trainer, Chris Grassick, again this morning to find out how Katalyst had come out of the race and to see what the imminent plans for our three-year-old filly are:

"Katalyst is all good this morning and she's lost plenty of weight following yesterday's run at Nottingham, which is indicative of the amount of effort that she did put into her race. She had a real good blow after the race and ate up well when she got home too so we're pleased with how she's come out of the contest. We really can't fault the effort that she put in and we're pleased that she's ran so well given the change in tactics and headgear.

We'll try and get her back out in the next couple of weeks or so to keep the momentum up and hopefully she'll continue to improve as time goes on. We'll keep you posted going forward and let you know of any targets we have in mind, and fingers crossed we're in the Winners' Enclosure soon!"

All being well, Katalyst will be back out on the track within a couple of weeks, and can hopefully pick up some more prize money to add to the £464 she landed for her Owners for the Day at Nottingham. Keep an eye on the Coral Racing Club to find out when she's going to be out next and to learn more about how you could win an Owner for the Day experience at her next race!
